Featuring new work from Judy Chung, Emily Madrigal, Sydney King
Known as mahou shoujo ("magical girl") in Japanese, Magical Girls is a genre of anime which features young girls and teenage women being granted magnificent powers. The artists in this exhibition draw from personal experiences to explore the ways children try to understand adulthood – instinctual mythologies about grown-ups, relationships, and the greater world. We called the exhibition Magical Girlz because childhood equals magic, and we’re a bunch of cool gals and we’re transforming deep, dark stuff into funky flowers.

There are a lot of bright colors and fluffy animals and cute things in the show, but when you look closely (like, reeeally close) there are scary things too! Like swords and blood and social anxiety. Stuffed animals arranged like a fucking renaissance painting. Together, Magical Girlz explores the potential of childhood make-believe as a way of navigating the world, mining it for surprising truths and contradictions.
